Brighton Judo Club has taught and promoted judo in Brighton for more the 30 years. The origins of the club are from the Myodokan (Japanese for 'The new way') which formed in the early 60's. Judo had been prominent in the United Kingdom, but the 'hub' of judo was in London. English students returned from Japan having been taught Japanese style judo. This was in preparation for judo becoming an Olympic sport in 1964. The Myodokan instructed in this new style of judo.

In the early 70's Mid-Sussex Judo Club transferred from Balcombe in Sussex to Brighton and joined with Myodokan to become the Mid-Sussex Judo Club based at the Pelham Institute in Upper Bedford Street, Brighton. The club remained there until July 1994, when Brighton Council required the property for development. The Council then gave us a tenancy at Baldwin House, in Edward Street. (It was formerly the Nalgo / Unison Club ). In July 1996 we moved to St James's Gardens - the current club venue after members and friends spent more than four months working to install all the facilities befitting a judo club. We recently had a write up in THE WORLD OF JUDO magazine.

The Club changed its name to Brighton Judo Club in September 1994, really to reflect its true location for the last 30+ years

Judo remains Great Britain's most successful Olympic sport, despite the disappointing results in 1996. Over the previous six Olympics - 1972 - 1992, Britain has been represented by 42 competitors who have won 15 medals between them - a success story that no other sport can match.

Judo is not simply a sport that encourages a range of skills encompassing physical fitness, alertness, awareness and self-discipline through techniques such as throwing and holding but according to the founder of modern day judo, Dr Jigaro Kano, it is a philosophy of life.
